It Begins with the Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the first rooms that homeowners explore when it comes to renovations. It’s the main gathering place in the home for families and friends after all. It’s the area where socialization happens most of the time, so it makes sense to choose this room to remodel. Creating the ideal kitchen can be extremely fun, and it should be. There are so many small changes that can be made to completely transform this space that it’s mind-boggling. But the big question is, is this remodeling project a sound financial decision?

Why are You Remodeling Your Kitchen?

What you need to do first is look at the long-term picture. Are you remodeling the kitchen for your preferences, or will you be selling your home soon? Either way, these renovations can help save money down the road. If you’re planning to stay in the home, you can explore some new choices that can help save your monthly utility bills. Opt for new energy-efficient windows that can save you on electricity. You can install low flow faucets to save on water consumption. You can buy appliances that are more energy efficient. You’ll also experience personal satisfaction that your new space is more operational and updated than it was previously.

Modern kitchen

Stand Out When You Sell Your Home

If you’re planning to sell your home, you can expect a very significant return on your investment with a renovated kitchen. Asking any realtor, they’ll tell you that one of the first things a potential buyer is interested in is the kitchen. If your space is fresh and updated with contemporary designs, it will make your home stand out against homes that have an older look. These renovations drastically improve the value of any home, and most see a very high return on that investment.

Concrete look cabinetry in kitchen

home kitchen makeover is a very sensible choice, especially if you have the budget to remodel only one room. This room is central to the home, and you can spend a lot of time cooking, eating, and socializing in it. The benefits of new and updated appliances and other elements far outweigh the costs you’ll incur. You’ll be surprised at how far you can get with virtually any proposed budget. When your project is finished, you’ll realize it was money well spent.

What a Vue

A double penthouse in the Vue Sarasota boasts not only a home theater for any movie fanatic and a wine room guarded by iconic sculptures, but a colorful man cave that blends in perfectly with the unit’s overall Italian garden theme. The homeowner nicknamed this room “the man cave,” a name it rightly deserves. From art collections to an air filtration system designed for the cigar smoker, this man cave is the perfect retreat to lose yourself in.

> Home Design Trends Just For Sarasota Homeowners

A Must See

Entering this man cave, you pass beneath a custom wood design accented on the light steel blue walls. Pushing open the towering custom leather-clad doors, the first thing you see is the artwork. The homeowner here has an extensive collection of items that he enjoys most, including paintings of ocean scenes and nature landscapes. The artwork on display joins a collection of ornamental artifacts and birds. Underfoot is a collection of 20 antique, handmade rugs the homeowner accumulated from around the world.

Man cave with arcade game

Opposite the artwork is a wall of custom cabinetry by Elmwood. A wine bar and TV complete the cabinetry system, which is where the homeowner displays his collection of bird ornaments. Another personalized touch is the video arcade machine. On the screen, you can see the reflection of the floor-to-ceiling windows. Outside is a view of the putting green and outdoor kitchen on the balcony, not to mention the stunning view of Sarasota Bay.

A Room with Two Faces

This Vue Sarasota man cave doubles as a smoking room. This space was designed with a cigar smoker in mind. The room has its own HVAC system and exhaust system, separate from all the other rooms in the unit to keep any cigar smoke from leaking into the rest of the unit. It also has a smoke eater to help purify the air.

> 5 Ideas for a Stylist Man Cave

Rounding out this space is the acoustical ceiling and a single raw column by the window. We decided not to cover this column with any drywall. We wanted to reflect the building structure, a look we kept in the main living space of the unit. Again, this helped create the look of an Italian garden the unit aspired to look like.

Sarasota Inspires

Sarasota is known for its unique home design trends that capture the essence of living near the water. The proximity to the beautiful turquoise and blue waters, along with the top beaches in the world, inspire Sarasota homeowners to bring the colors of the outdoors inside.

By the Beaches

In Sarasota, it is common to see home interiors with shades of blue, sand-tone colors, and warm tones. These are reminiscent of the beautiful beaches in the area. The use of natural materials like white-washed or ash wood, jute, cotton, and limestone adds to the coastal vibe of these homes. The design is often kept simplistic and minimalistic. Also, they sometimes have an open floor plan to give the feeling of flow and to maximize the natural light that pours in.

Coastal bathroom with gray tile and walk in shower

More Unique Trends

Another unique trend in Sarasota is the “upside-down floor plan,” where the bedrooms are on the first floor and the living area is on the second floor. This design allows homeowners to enjoy beautiful water views from the living area while still having privacy in their bedrooms.

Fun chandeliers and sconces are also popular in Sarasota homes. These lighting fixtures add a touch of whimsy to the coastal aesthetic and serve as a statement piece in the room.

> Cabex Construction Awarded Best of SRQ 2023

Lastly, Sarasota homeowners tend to favor light window treatments that allow the natural light to come through and create an ambiance that reflects the beauty of the water and beaches.

White tile shower and yellow painting

In conclusion, the unique home design trends in Sarasota, Florida, capture the essence of living near the water and the beauty of the area’s beaches. From the use of natural materials to the color scheme, lighting fixtures, and floor plans, these designs create a cozy, coastal feel that is both relaxing and beautiful.

Creating That Wow Factor

A Ritz condo surrounded by the best that Sarasota has to offer from boardwalks to marinas to restaurants to Sarasota Bay should have nothing but the best when it comes to its interior. The new Ritz-Carlton Residences in Downtown Sarasota exemplifies luxury living, and each of the 73 condominium residences deserve every chance they can get to show off the luxurious lifestyle they have to offer.

One such condo resides on the eighth floor. With developer-built kitchens and bathrooms, it already had the essentials, but the wow factor wasn’t just yet. The homeowners still had plenty of blank walls that needed an extra touch of grandeur. With the help of a high-end design-build firm like us, we added that wow factor with newly designed fireplace built-ins, closets, textured wallpaper, live edge wood, and 3D tile.

Custom Bathroom Island

The custom bathroom island is the first touch of luxury we designed and built in this unit. As the homeowner said, it’s “so much better than just empty space.” One of the main reasons homeowners gravitate toward these bathroom islands is to have a focal point for an otherwise empty space.

In this otherwise large master bathroom with an open his and her shower, your eye immediately goes to the island. This island is Elmwood Custom Cabinetry with a Silver Plum High Gloss finish. The island top is crafted with recycled leather.

Illuminated Master Bedroom

The same high gloss finish and leather tops continue into the master bedroom, making up what the homeowners like to call their craft wall. The glossy cabinets seem to disappear into the wall from the reflections from the bay outside the window. The Elmwood shelves also reflect the water with their white high gloss finish.

The really magnificent feature in the master bedroom is the drop ceiling. We designed this new drop ceiling, which is fully illuminated and has a diamond-pattern design that flows from the ceiling and down the wall, disappearing behind to where the bed would be. With a coffee bar along the inside wall for easy access to refreshing drinks and snacks, do you really need a reason to leave the bedroom?

Quartzite Fireplace Surround

Now you might want to step out of the bedroom if not just to relax in front of the fireplace and lounge in the fiery glow. Custom-made entertainment panels and shelves surround this electric fireplace. This system uses revolutionary ultrasonic technology to create the flame and smoke effect. As the mist rises, the light reflects against the water molecules creating a convincing illusion of flames and smoke. The result is an appearance so authentic it could be mistaken for a traditional wood-burning fireplace.

As if melting from the fire, a chocolate-look panel in Creamy Mocha Horz grain backs the TV, while a snaking shelf system painted in High Gloss White floats above. The custom fireplace is surrounded with a silvery Ijan Blue quartzite. Completing the wall are two columns in concrete Venetian plaster.

More Touches of Luxury

Ijan Blue quartzite wraps around the Elmwood Custom Cabinetry in the den in this Ritz condo. This floating unit has a Natural Diamond Gloss finish. A quartzite piece also acts as a desk near the window that overlooks Downtown Sarasota.

Sprinkled throughout the unit are walls clad with luxury wallpaper. Run your hands over this textured, handmade wallpaper to feel a jagged, leathery finish. The entire foyer is covered with this textured wallpaper and is even covering a couple of hidden doors. This wallpaper is the ultimate accent piece to make your home really stand out from the ordinary. It helps make everything blend in and sort of melt together.

3D Tile & Live Edge Wood

While we didn’t touch the developer-built bathrooms in this Ritz condo, we did redesign the powder bathroom that’s right off of the main entrance. A small floating cabinet hovers above the ground with again a top of Ijan Blue quartzite. These custom floating cabinets are illuminated by a custom decorative mirror that sits on a wall of 3D marble mosaic tile, or as the homeowner calls it, a wall of “bling-bling.”

Our finishing touch for the best wow factor yet in this Ritz unit is the custom live edge wood. The bedroom at the end of the hall has new live edge wood shelves and countertops, and a beautifully crafted almost 400-pound custom barn door serves as the closet entrance.

A live edge slab is a piece of wood that still has the natural edges of the tree. The width of a trunk determines the width of the live edge slabs. With these live edge wood pieces, this Ritz-Carlton residence is truly displaying its luxurious lifestyle to its fullest potential.

An Upgrade to a Masterpiece

The Beau Ciel in the heart of Sarasota’s cultural arts district has been called an iconic architectural masterpiece. An upgrade within has taken the masterpiece to a whole new level. With new touches to the chef’s kitchen and a complete remodel of the master bathroom by the Cabex team, this tenth floor unit is more iconic than ever.

A Bright Bathroom

After stepping off the high-speed private elevator into the grand foyer, turning to the right and passing the panoramic views of Sarasota Bay and yacht harbors below takes you to the master suite. A once dark, sandy-colored space is transformed into a contemporary design with the help of Cabico Custom Cabinetry’s Unique Series in a bright Cantilly finish. These wall-mounted cabinets have roll-out drawers, and the Cambria countertop has a beveled edge.

The dark corner shower is not brighter and sits beside a freestanding tub beneath an LED mirror. The shower curb and shower seat come from a remnant we picked out with the homeowners.

The oblong bathtub is a Neptune Florence freestanding tub and is the perfect centerpiece in this spa-like oasis, the atmosphere so many homeowners want these days. The bathroom floor is Sterling White and runs over to the shower which is a bright white hexagon pattern.

With wallpaper making a comeback, the homeowners had no trouble picking out a wallpaper pattern themselves that fits their style and vision for their new space.

Chef’s Kitchen

We also added some finishing touches in the chef’s kitchen. This area wasn’t a complete remodel, however. The cabinetry stayed the same. We took out the dark granite countertops and replaced them with Pompeii Lincoln, a white quartz with thin brown veining throughout it. The quartz also now covers the oversized center island cooking station.

Dissolving into a Retro Memory

Panoramic views of the Gulf are no longer the only magnificent views coming from this penthouse in Longboat Key’s Sea Gate Club Condominiums. A bland 1970s interior dissolves into a retro memory after a complete condo remodel. The remodel brought a modern, waterfront-inspired style to the unit that rivals the breathtaking views of the Gulf outside.

First Impressions

This complete remodel was a 1,597-square foot penthouse consisting of six rooms: kitchen, dining/living area, master bath, guest bath, master suite, and guest bedroom. When our designers walked into this condo for the first time, they found a very outdated layout. The floor was a mix of ceramic tile and carpet, there were several wall-length mirrors, and stone counters and stale white cabinetry made up the boxed-in kitchen.

> The Sanctuary Bathroom Remodel

The look (see the Before photos directly below) definitely didn’t belong in a fifteen-story condominium. Somebody needed to hit the ball to get the upgrade rolling.

Stripped Down

Once we finalized the designs with the homeowners, our field crew went to work. We basically stripped down everything inside this condo. The remodel was almost more like a complete build-out. As a matter of fact, all we didn’t touch were the windows, the sliding glass doors, the lanai coverings, and the entry door.

> See Another Sea Gate Condo Remodel We Completed

We removed all the interior wallboard from the walls and ceilings, the interior doors, and the floor coverings and setting materials to reveal the concreate substrate underneath. Now we had an “empty shell” to fill with the new design.

A Polo Blue Kitchen

Beginning with the kitchen, we did what so many homeowners are asking for and tore down the wall that separated the kitchen from the living room. Everyone wants that open floor plan. This condo definitely needed it so that the homeowner could have that waterfront view even when in the kitchen.

Polo blue cabinets by Elmwood Custom Cabinetry replaced the unimpressive white cabinets, giving the unit a much needed pop of color. The blue blends in perfectly with the reflections from the water outside. These cabinets are full extension and have the soft-close feature.

Dark Pompeii quartz countertops replaced the lighter stone countertops. New appliances include an induction cooktop, a microwave combination oven, a stainless steel spring pulldown faucet, and a workstation sink in natural golden bamboo.

The Twilight Rooms

The designs for the master bathroom were so beautiful that we had to repeat them in the guest bathroom. We replaced cheap-looking cabinets with modern ones by Elmwood Custom Cabinetry, again here with the same Polo Blue color as in the kitchen. These cabinets also have the full extension and soft-close features.

The showers originally had a clouded sliding glass door. We completely reconfigured the showers and designed an easily accessible walk-in shower with glass doors you can pull open and shut; no more sliding doors. The bathroom floors run through the bathroom, into the shower, and up the shower walls, giving each space a nice, continuous flow like the flow of the ocean outside. This flooring tile is Macaubus Twilight with an Anticato Finish. Each shower has a beautiful blue glass mosaic backsplash that compliment the blue cabinets.

The only differences in the master shower from the guest shower is the inclusion of a floating bench seat a shower niche with a blue accent wall tile.

This Condo Has an Accent

An impressive standout feature in this remodel is a floor-to-ceiling accent wall in the entryway. This 3D mosaic wall of lava stone is the first thing you see when you walk in. This wall would definitely make any guests pause and stare in awe for a while, not to mention you probably couldn’t help yourself but run your hands over the jagged stones.

The final feature to showcase is the floor. We took the typical ceramic tile flooring of a 1970s condo and brought it into the 21st century with Naturally Aged Flooring. These luxury flooring tiles are White Oak with a Designer Grey finish. It’s a huge difference from what was there before, just like everything else in this magnificent condo. It’s now a comfy place to sit back and relax and enjoy the sunrise and sunset from anywhere inside.

Let’s Give Your Home Its Upgrade.

Sea Gate Update

We’re excited to show you a new remodeling project in Longboat Key’s Sea Gate Condo. We worked on upgrading the kitchen, a guest bathroom, and the master bathroom. The kitchen originally had some of the typical things that homeowners want to update. This includes those standard white cabinets and raised panels. This homeowner really wanted to bring his kitchen up to date and go a lot more modern.

Regarding the backsplash, we wanted to update the design of this Sea Gate condo from a glass tile with a multi-color pattern. We updated it with a bit of a modern element to it to a new glass mosaic tile that brought in some of the blue tones from the ocean that’s right outside the window. This is why he bought the condo in the first place, so we really wanted to connect the inside with the ocean.

> Project Spotlight: Sea Gate Condo Remodel

Concrete-Look Cabinets

We also brought in a concrete look to the cabinets, which is a really cool feature. The concrete look adds a contemporary feel to the space. The concrete style is part of a two-tone look with dark gray on the lower cabinets and some of the tall cabinets. We also used this style on the upper cabinets. We combined that with that blue glass tile backsplash, again, to bring in that look of the water into the space.

> Project Spotlight: Sea Gate Condo Build-Out

Then to help keep the space from feeling too cold, we added some wood elements with the floating shelves and also a little wood countertop area over the wine cooler, which serves a dual purpose as a charcuterie board built into the kitchen. These little touches really create a big impact in this otherwise smaller kitchen space.

Using the Color Palette

For the guest bathroom, we wanted to continue some of the same color palette from the kitchen with the gray and the blue. We brought the gray tones into the shower area where we used a large format tile to help keep that modern feel. In an accent stripe in the shower, we used a nice glass blue tile that looked like the tile in the kitchen. It was something the client really loved.

Contemporary Master

In the master bathroom, being a little bit bigger than the guest bath, the existing situation was a tub that we converted to a shower. In this case, we made the shower a large walk-in with a linear drain and a wall-to-wall niche. We also continued that tone on tone with the gray wall tiles here. On the side walls, we used a darker gray version of the floor tile. The floor tile and the accent wall were the lighter grays. At the vanity, we used a glass accent tile to again bring in a little bit of color and give it a cool look.

> Save These Photos to Your Houzz Ideabook

We really like the way that this Sea Gate condo turned out. It has a great modern feel. It’s a great example of how you can do tone on tone while adding just a small pop of color. We hope that you love it as much as we do.

Trends in Condo Renos

Senior Designer Joe Clark spoke with Sarasota Style Magazine about what home improvement trends we can expect to see this year. In Part 4 of 5 of the full interview exclusively on cabexconstruction.com, Joe talks about trends in condo and home renovations.

Are There Different Styles For a Condo Renovation From a Home Renovation?

Our clients who own condos, particularly ones near the beach, are going for a modern look. The condo trend seems to be a lot more on that contemporary side of things. In homes, renovations do go that route as well. But we’re seeing the transitional side of design where there are very modern elements mixed in with more transitional or traditional. This creates a more eclectic feel to the space where you’re mixing and matching different styles to create a unique look.

We’re taking the “modern rustic” and moving toward the contemporary side, whether it’s the finish or countertop or the cabinet pull style. You can see a very transitional-looking cabinet door and have a really contemporary cabinet on it. It’s a marriage of a couple of different styles that creates a unique look. And it doesn’t look detached from the architecture. A lot of the architecture here Florida is this faux Mediterranean or coastal look. You don’t want to go completely opposite of that. However, you can detach a little bit from the exterior and do something very unique on the inside.
