A Modern Outdoor Kitchen

A private pool with an artificial rock waterfall and a spacious backyard with a fun play center needed only one more feature for the completed outdoor living experience: a modern outdoor kitchen. This home in Sarasota’s Serenoa Golf Club underwent an upgrade to its existing outdoor kitchen for a much more modern style. With the help of our weatherproof cabinetry line, we extended this outdoor kitchen, complete with the latest and greatest appliances.

Outdoor Cabinetry

Naturekast is the go-to cabinetry line for outdoor kitchens. We installed these weatherproof cabinets in a Weathered Graphite finish, which is brown in color. Matching the brown cabinetry is a split-face ledger stone called Tuscany Scabas Stacked Stone that we installed on the wall above the hood and wrapped around the high bar wall on all sides. Tuscany Scabas Stacked Stone panels feature soft gray tones. These natural travertine panels are perfect for accent walls and backsplashes throughout the home.

In between the hood and cabinets are the countertops and backsplash. This Snowfall granite is a pristine, snowy white granite mixed with ebony and charcoal. This granite slides up from the countertop and into the backsplash that will fully cover the wall up to the bottom of the hood. The same materials are used in the extension on the other side of the window, as you can see below.

Nothing an Outdoor Kitchen Should Be Without

Regarding the high bar, we tore this down to build a completely new one. We removed the concrete walls that acted as the countertop support, as well as the glass block.

Rounding out the new outdoor kitchen are, of course, the appliances. In the main part of the outdoor kitchen by the high bar is a Green Egg grill and cabinet, ice maker, 30-inch Heston gas grill, undermount sink, and undercounter refrigerator. In the outside extension is a low burner cabinet, a vent cabinet for the gas regulator, and a kegerator to complete the perfect outdoor living experience.

Phase Two Underway

Nestled in the middle of Sarasota’s Oyster Bay on almost ¾ acres of land is a home waiting for a makeover. Built in 1957, this home was actually updated in 2012. That update included an open floor plan, a dining and entertaining area with hardwood floors, and opportunity for natural light. Ten years later, the new homeowners decided it was time for another extensive upgrade. This time, the remodel will includ waterfall peninsulas, modern wallpaper, a new exterior color, and an outdoor kitchen beneath a pavilion.

With so much to be done, we split this project into two phases. With this in mind, the second phase focuses on an outdoor kitchen and brand-new pavilion (see Part 1 for a look at the first phase).

The Outdoor Kitchen

This home already had a large, screened-in lanai complete with a wood-burning fireplace and a TV wall that extended the inside into the backyard. The large backyard had a lot of space around a pool as well. This space around the pool will be completely moved around. Along with the reconfiguration of the pool, the extra space will become a pavilion covering an extensive outdoor kitchen and bar.

The outdoor kitchen area will comprise of NatureKast Weatherproof Cabinetry. This will be in a cypress resin finish and will run along the back wall of the closed-in pavilion. Components of the outdoor kitchen additionally include a Twin Eagles 36-inch grill with infrared rotisserie and sear zone, a base cabinet for a Big Green Egg, a trash cabinet, a kegerator with a double tap through the countertop, a beverage cooler, a sink, an ice maker, and an undercounter wine cooler.

> Outdoor Kitchen Trends

The countertop will be a neutral white quartz called Midday that will run up to the bar top. The bar top itself will be a custom wood finish and stain.

The Pavilion

The frame of the Oyster Bay pavilion will run eight feet high up to the bottom of the roof. The back side facing the street will have a full-height solid wall that will have siding and paint that matches the house. Recessed lights will run along the faux wood beams beneath the roof, along with an outdoor ceiling fan mounted on a beam running down the middle.

White-washed tongue and groove ceiling treatment will run in between the beams and the back wall for a cohesive look. Finally, a TV will sit on the back wall. Lastly for this Oyster Bay project, we’ll wrap the columns with the same materials as the house.

In the end, everything will match. The pavilion will just be extension of the home. Anyone driving past will think both structures were built at the same time.

Modern Outdoor Upgrade

A private pool with an artificial rock waterfall and a spacious backyard with a backyard play center need only one more feature for the completed outdoor living experience: a modern outdoor kitchen. This home in Sarasota’s Senoa Golf Club is finally getting an upgrade to its existing outdoor kitchen with a much more modern style. Following the help of our weatherproof cabinetry line, we’ll be extending this outdoor kitchen, complete with the latest and greatest appliances.

Graphite & Stone

Naturekast is the go-to cabinetry line for outdoor kitchens. As a result, this outdoor kitchen will be getting these outdoor weatherproof cabinets in a Weathered Graphite finish, which is brown in color. Matching the brown cabinetry will be a split face ledger stone called Tuscany Scabas Stacked Stone to be installed on the wall above the hood and also wrapped around the high bar wall on all sides. Tuscany Scabas Stacked Stone panels feature soft creams and orange tones. These natural travertine panels are perfect for accent walls and backsplashes throughout the home.

In between the two shades of brown will be a lighter color in the form of the countertops and backsplash. This Snowfall granite is a pristine, snowy white granite mixed with ebony and charcoal. In fact, this granite will slide up from the countertop and into the backsplash that will fully cover the wall up to the bottom of the hood. The same materials will be in the extension on the other side of the window, as you can see in the rough drawing of the design below.

The Appliances

Regarding the high bar, we’re tearing this down to build a completely new one. Specifically, we’ll be removing the concrete walls that acted as the countertop support, as well as the glass block.

> 2022 Outdoor Kitchen Design Trends

Lastly are, of course, the appliances. In the main part of the outdoor kitchen where the high bar is will be a Green Egg grill and cabinet, ice maker, 30-inch Heston gas grill, undermount sink, and under counter refrigerator. In the outside extension will be a low burner cabinet, a vent cabinet for the gas regulator, and a kegerator to complete the perfect outdoor living experience.

Reimagined outdoor living spaces have been rising in popularity in the past couple of years as many homeowners are transitioning the heart of the home to the outdoors, and it’s no different in 2022.  Additionally, the trend of entertaining family and friends in an attractive and functional outdoor space continues to grow. The National Kitchen & Bath Association reports that 60% of homeowners are looking into the idea of adding an outdoor kitchen in 2022. Are you one of them? Let’s look at some of the latest trends we can expect in outdoor living designs.

More Than Just a Grill

Focusing on outdoor kitchens first, these designs include much more than just your basic kitchen concept. Secondly, homeowners want outdoor cooking stations with flat top grills, which help the juice to remain in contact with the ingredients to create a more savory meal.

Don’t limit yourself to just grilling burgers or hot dogs for dinner. Think about pizza stations, ample storage for ingredients and food, and refrigerators for diner-style breakfast and lunches.

Bring Your Inside Work Outside

Outdoor kitchens aren’t the only spaces being added. The concept of a garden office, or an outdoor office, is gaining more attention among many homeowners who are forced to work from home. This idea is simply to have an outside place that is comforting and refreshing.

Also, a garden office gives you the joy of working in open spaces that are a nice change from the four-walled offices we have been so used to.

> Lakewood Ranch Country Club Outdoor Kitchen

Love to Lounge

When it comes to lounging outside, consider transforming your space with low seating so that you can enjoy a full garden or pool view from your sitting area.

Nothing defines lounging around than technology. So many homeowners are integrating technology not only to the interior of the home but to the exterior. This includes Wi-Fi boosters and color-changing LED lighting.

If a whole home remodel or addition is in your future, you’ll want to increase the functionality of your home and make future work easier. To clarify, keeping this in mind when planning your remodel, here are five construction ideas to think about incorporating into your upgrade:

1. Open Up the Kitchen

Firstly, no longer do homeowners want their kitchens secluded from the rest of the home in its own little cube. Changing closed-in kitchens into open spaces that flow directly into the living or great room has been a very popular construction design for a while now. This helps make the entire home more modern.

2. Increase Storage Space
We’re designing and building larger master closets. We’ve even completely transformed non-closet spaces into closets. For example, we remodeled this master closet from a home office. We added to one of the walls to close in the space, specifically added shelves, and even added a chandelier to complete this unique walk-in closet.

3. Make That Ceiling Stand Out
You can’t deny the ceiling always has a big impact on the room. Redoing a ceiling is a great opportunity to fix the previous basic design flaws. This is an example of a recessed ceiling upgraded into a newly-built coffered ceiling complete with trim work and paint.

4. Bring the Outside In
Also, open your space up during construction even more and light the area up by adding or upgrading your windows and doors.

5. Outdoor Living Space
Lastly, the desire to make cooking, eating, and entertaining outside easier and more convenient is more popular than ever. Ranging from cozy and minimalistic to large, fully-outfitted structures that rival your indoor kitchen, these outdoor spaces can be built to your needs and preferences.

In conclusion, every home has the opportunity to completely transform during construction. How will your home transform? See what’s possible when you talk to a designer today!

If you’re planning to update or add an outdoor kitchen to your home, NatureKast is the way to go. In our showroom, we have an outdoor cabinetry line called NatureKast Outdoor Cabinets. They’re 100% weatherproof cabinetry, panels, trim and more- perfect for the outdoor living space.

In the exterior elements, the best part about working with NatureKast Cabinets is their array of choices that they have. Unlike most outdoor cabinet line manufacturers, NatureKast has many amenities your interior kitchens have like your trash cabinets. They also have things that your interior kitchens do not have such as cooler cabinets, smoking egg grill cabinets, or cabinets specifically designed to house the larger grills on the market today. Innovative cabinets are available for most of the big names in outdoor grills, cooktops, sinks, and appliances.

A very interesting component of the NatureKast cabinet is the exterior door and finished elements of the cabinetry. For this, they’ve used an extremely dense closed cell foam that you will see on the inside of the door. There are no wood components even though it has the look and feel of real cypress or teak. NatureKast also has upper cabinet elements and cabinets. They have large hoods for the exterior going over your grills for the blower unit, so if you did want to have this under cover and you’re worried about the smoke being an issue, they have ventilation systems for the exterior grills that can be housed inside of a NatureKast cabinet.

Let’s give your outdoor kitchen a fresh, modern look with NatureKast. Schedule a Free Design Session with one of our designers to get started right now!

From Out of the Boom

The real estate boom of the mid-2000s changed the character of our community. In many new neighborhoods, you could easily imagine you were driving on the outskirts of Florence. It was a case of supply and demand. Med-Rev architecture was in vogue, and the Tuscan variation was especially popular. Thousands of Italianate homes popped up to meet that demand. Although the real estate bubble burst in 2008, the legacy of the boom endures. Especially in the homes of Lakewood Ranch. That’s one of the reasons for this Lakewood Ranch remodel.

The First Impression

In April 2017, one of those Tuscan-style homes was for sale. Tracy and Jason Cotterill peeked inside. Their first impression? The old house was showing its age. The tile-roofed residence had been built in 2007. They could tell. Its style was out-of-style; its appliances were far past their warranty dates. Aside from its old-fashioned appearance, the house also needed a lot of work. That’s the reason they quickly bought the place. Why?

TIP #1: Decide what you want. The design and permitting process can last up to three months before construction begins. Don’t rush it. Be clear on what you want. Don’t settle for a plan you merely like. Think it through until you come up with a plan you love.

Because the Cotterills saw beyond appearances. The house had good bones and a lot of potential. They wanted to unleash that potential and bring it up to contemporary standards. That’s easy to say. But hard to do. The Cotterills’ ambitions transcended mere remodeling. Nothing less than total reinvention was what they had in mind. It was a job for the experts. Fortunately, they knew exactly whom to call: themselves and the experts on their creative team. Who else? They’re the husband-wife co-owners of Cabex Construction and Cabinets Extraordinaire, after all. It’s what they do for a living, and they’re very good at it.

Complete Gut

After buying the structure, the couple wasted no time for their Lakewood Ranch remodel. First, they completely gutted it. After taking the house apart, they started putting it back together.  Upstairs, the Cotterills merged two bedrooms into one and added a walk-in wardrobe. Once their new master bedroom was complete, they moved in and quickly got to work on the rest of the structure.

TIP #2: Create an inside-outside layout. The boxy look is old news. Contemporary homeowners want a bright, clean, uncluttered space. Avoid low ceilings and claustrophobic dark zones.

Downstairs, they started from the ground up. They put down new flooring: white oak hardwood in a seafoam shade. After that, the kitchen got extra loving care. They created a practical island layout and installed state-of-the-art cabinets. An arsenal of stainless steel, Miehle appliances introduced the latest 21st century technology. Future chefs would be pleased.

Reinventing

Form followed function throughout the reinvention, but some changes were for looks alone. The Cotterills installed bi-fold front doors at the entry and added more sliding doors at the perimeter of the great room. That space had originally been closed off. Stepping inside the house, your first impression was a wall. They got rid of it. Instead, you now see a view of the lake and the golf course beyond it.

“We wanted to create an indoor-outdoor flow,” Tracy Cotterill says, pointing to a vista of bucolic blue skies and lush greenery. “You can now enjoy a gorgeous view, wherever you are in the house.”

TIP#3: Technology is your friend. High-tech features take your home to the next level. These range from convenience and security to networked media systems. This tech is cutting-edge now, but it’s quickly becoming the standard.

A dramatic glimpse of the outside world is good, and it’s even better when there’s something to do outside. For this Lakewood Ranch remodel, the Cotterills installed a pool and a tricked-out outdoor kitchen and transformed wasted exterior space into more living space. Many changes were pleasing to the eye, but others were nearly invisible — unless you know what to look for. Take that seemingly ordinary faucet in the kitchen sink. You activate it with touchless sensors. Using your foot. Those pretty cabinets above? These open with a delicate tap, thanks to hidden servomotors.

“We upgraded to smart-home standards whenever we could,” Jason Cotterill says. “We can also now command all the pool and lighting systems with a voice-controlled app on Alexa.”

New Everything

All these changes added up. After 21 months, their old house had a new style, new layout and new technology. The Cotterills had radically transformed an out-of-date living space — without making radical structural changes. No load-bearing walls were harmed. Work wrapped up at the end of 2018. There had been plenty of work.  But Jason and Tracy Cotterill had plenty of help. The couple gives a shout out to the collaborations of Jeremy Strong and Kerri Plazza (for kitchen design), Joe Menna (for building) and Francesco Plazza (for designing and installing countertops).

TIP #4: You get what you pay for. Unless you are a home-renovation expert, find one. Do your research, and choose a firm with a high reputation for its quality, workmanship and products. Choose a designer who listens to your ideas and requirements.

“This project was a true team effort,” Jason Cotterill says. “We couldn’t have done it alone.”

The Cotterills and their team did an amazing job. Even so, it seems like a lot of trouble. Why go through all that? Because Tracy and Jason wanted to prove a point. You don’t have to settle for a house that fits you like a bad suit. Change is possible. With the right team, anything is possible. The Cotterills’ reinvented residence makes that clear.

“Many homeowners feel like they’re stuck with their standardized, existing homes,” Tracy Cotterill says. “We wanted to show they’re not. If you know what you’re doing, you can totally transform your home and make it uniquely yours. You’ll enjoy a far superior living experience if you choose to stay. You’ll be far more likely to sell if you don’t.”

Have you ever thought about the benefits of adding an outdoor kitchen to your home? Whether you’re building a completely new house or remodeling the space you have right now, creating a place to cook and maybe even dine outdoors could be a great investment to make. Here are five awesome reasons in adding an outdoor kitchen to your home.

1. Great For Entertaining

An outdoor kitchen is perfect for entertaining. When food is grilled out on the patio, your guests can gather around the grill and socialize as dinner is being prepared. An indoor kitchen can get crowded when your guests are trying to hang out with the cook. You can make your guests more comfortable outside by adding patio heaters, outdoor furniture, and lights.

2. Increases Value of Your Home

Because of the popularity of outdoor kitchens, remodelers earn a high rate of return on their financial investment. Most grills and other patio appliances used today are made from stainless steel, which means they can handle the fluctuating temperatures from season to season. When you have a functional outdoor kitchen, you have an investment you can use and enjoy.

3. Saves on Utility Bills

When you’re grilling outside during the summer, your AC won’t have to overload itself to keep your house cool. When you bake, fry, roast, and broil foods in your inside-kitchen, the temperature in your house rises, which kicks the AC into overdrive. When you cook outdoors, you’ll save big on energy consumption.

4. Keeps Smells Outside

We all know some foods smell amazing while they’re cooking, but then there are some foods that definitely don’t. When you cook foods that could have an unpleasant smell like fish or deep-fried items, those smells can linger for a while. When you prepare the same foods outside, your house stays smelling fresh.

5. Expands Your Living Space

Don’t think you need to add on a room to have an outdoor kitchen. All you need to do is use the space you already have on your back porch. If you have a covered patio, that’s all you need to bring in appliances and have the outdoor kitchen of your dreams.

What’s the number one reason why you want to have an outdoor kitchen? Think about how you want your outdoor space to look, tell us about your ideas, and we can start creating! Once you have your outdoor kitchen, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without one.
