Consider The Right Design Features

Home renovation is a significant investment of time and money. The choices made during the design process will affect the function and appearance of the home for years to come. Therefore, it is essential to consider the right design features to create a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and practical. Here are five essential home design features that should be considered during a home remodel.

Maintenance

This feature involves understanding the level of maintenance the homeowner is willing to perform on the space. For instance, do you want high-maintenance materials like marble, or do you prefer low-maintenance materials like quartz?

Open sliding doors on lanai

Style

The design aesthetic should also be considered when renovating a home. Homeowners should determine the style they want for their space, whether it’s a contemporary or traditional design.

Timeless Look

Large elements like cabinetry and flooring are not easily changed, so they should be designed to withstand the test of time. On the other hand, trendy features like wall colors and furniture can be updated more frequently.

Use of Space

The function of a space should determine how it is designed. For instance, if the homeowner enjoys entertaining, they may opt for a full-service butler’s pantry instead of one with limited storage.

Modern kitchen with island

Functionality

Finally, functionality should be considered when designing a space. While some areas may be designed for aesthetics, others may be used for their utility. For example, a powder room may be designed creatively to serve as a piece of art, while a butler’s pantry needs to be functional.

In conclusion, designing a home requires careful consideration of many factors, including maintenance, style, timelessness, use of space, and functionality. By taking these design features into account during a home remodel, homeowners can create a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing for years to come.

What a Vue

A double penthouse in the Vue Sarasota boasts not only a home theater for any movie fanatic and a wine room guarded by iconic sculptures, but a colorful man cave that blends in perfectly with the unit’s overall Italian garden theme. The homeowner nicknamed this room “the man cave,” a name it rightly deserves. From art collections to an air filtration system designed for the cigar smoker, this man cave is the perfect retreat to lose yourself in.

> Home Design Trends Just For Sarasota Homeowners

A Must See

Entering this man cave, you pass beneath a custom wood design accented on the light steel blue walls. Pushing open the towering custom leather-clad doors, the first thing you see is the artwork. The homeowner here has an extensive collection of items that he enjoys most, including paintings of ocean scenes and nature landscapes. The artwork on display joins a collection of ornamental artifacts and birds. Underfoot is a collection of 20 antique, handmade rugs the homeowner accumulated from around the world.

Man cave with arcade game

Opposite the artwork is a wall of custom cabinetry by Elmwood. A wine bar and TV complete the cabinetry system, which is where the homeowner displays his collection of bird ornaments. Another personalized touch is the video arcade machine. On the screen, you can see the reflection of the floor-to-ceiling windows. Outside is a view of the putting green and outdoor kitchen on the balcony, not to mention the stunning view of Sarasota Bay.

A Room with Two Faces

This Vue Sarasota man cave doubles as a smoking room. This space was designed with a cigar smoker in mind. The room has its own HVAC system and exhaust system, separate from all the other rooms in the unit to keep any cigar smoke from leaking into the rest of the unit. It also has a smoke eater to help purify the air.

> 5 Ideas for a Stylist Man Cave

Rounding out this space is the acoustical ceiling and a single raw column by the window. We decided not to cover this column with any drywall. We wanted to reflect the building structure, a look we kept in the main living space of the unit. Again, this helped create the look of an Italian garden the unit aspired to look like.

An Exciting Southgate Project

Sarasota is a city renowned for its stunning beaches, cultural attractions, and vibrant community. But for one lucky homeowner, their Sarasota experience is about to get even better. We are working on an exciting project on a Southgate home- adding a second story to a one-story home, complete with brand new bedroom and bathroom. But that’s not all; we’ll also be upgrading the kitchen, living room, and garage, creating a stunning new structure that seamlessly blends contemporary style with classic Florida charm. Here’s what to expect from this home’s transformation and a look at the latest design trends and techniques we’ll be using to achieve a stunning result.

Entering this Southgate home before any construction work begins, wood-look designs and finishes cover the walls and built-ins as seen in the picture below. A wall blocks off the kitchen, cornering the kitchen into a tight space with a corridor leading off to a bedroom and den.

We’re going to be completely redesigning this ground floor. The wall dividing the living room and kitchen will be coming out in favor of the popular open floor plan. This will open up the kitchen, allowing for more space and ease to move about.

The Kitchen

The new kitchen space will consist of Medallion Gold Series cabinetry with a natural maple veneer interior finish. The upper cabinets will have an off-white finish called Magnolia, while the lower cabinets will have a sort of teal-colored finish called Lakeshore. The cabinets will be accented with metal knobs and pulls.

The countertop will be a natural stone quartz called Pompeii Rock Salt and will have finished eased edges and an exposed bottom. The sink will be a farmhouse double basin sink with a deck-mounted faucet. The backsplash will be a glossy solid white ceramic tile from Daltile. Overall, this kitchen space in this Southgate home will have a modern and elegant feel with a neutral color palette and high-quality materials. See the proposed design below in the Before and After slider.

[bafg id=”23558″]

The Living Room

The upgraded living room space on the ground floor will be designed to have a modern and cozy feel to it with a beautiful fireplace as the centerpiece. The fireplace will have the same Rock Salt quartz as in the kitchen for a sleek and durable surface for the mantel. A 28-inch electric fireplace insert will add character and ambiance to the room, while the faux brick detail around the insert border will add a touch of rustic charm. To further enhance the room’s aesthetic, the sheetrock ceiling in the living room will also be removed.

The flooring in this living room will have a luxurious vinyl plank by Trucor called Russet Oak. This flooring has a beautiful wood-like appearance, adding warmth and texture to the room. Overall, this new living room space in this Southgate home will end up being a beautiful and inviting area, perfect for relaxing and entertaining. See the proposed design below in the Before and After slider.

[bafg id=”23561″]

The Master Suite

The exciting part of this Southgate home upgrade is the second story addition. Right now, the home is one story with an exposed carport taking up half of the building. We completely redesigned this half of the home. The addition of a second floor obviously means there will be the necessary addition of a staircase. The new staircase will take the place of a door currently going out to the carport from the living room. The staircase will take you up to the master bedroom complete with bathroom and laundry room.

The master bath will have the same cabinetry as in the kitchen. The countertops will be a recycled quartz product from Curava called Cloud, which brings the beauty of the open sky indoors to be enjoyed from the comfort of your own personal piece of heaven. A freestanding tub will be the focal point here. This double-ended clawfoot tub rests upon detailed imperial ball and claw feet. The double-ended design allows for comfortable reclining at either end of the tub.

Other features of the master bath will include an elongated two-piece toilet and utilatub floor mount tub in the water closet. The shower floor and wall tile will be a porcelain tile called Amstel Blanco. A beautiful accent waterfall of handcrafted, transparent glass will run down the wall in shades of blue and green called Azuline. The shower design also features a seat for added convenience.

> How to Remodel an Old House

The Garage

The second story above the carport means the carport space will no longer be needed. This space will transform into a more traditional, enclosed garage with two garage doors. See the proposed design below in the Before and After slider.

[bafg id=”23566″]

Overall, this addition offers both functionality and style, making the home a more beautiful and practical space to live in.

Now is the Time

This question comes up a lot, more than you’d think. Well, why not remodel now? If you’re reading this, you’ve most likely been thinking about remodeling for a while now. You just want to change up your space, maybe freshen up with paint colors or redo your kitchen or bathroom. Well, now is as good a time as any and the best time to remodel.

Accommodating Your Schedule

If you have specific time frames that you’re looking into, definitely give us a call. Let’s have that conversation because that determines when we should start your project, how long we think it will take, and the size of your project. These are all great questions to be asking so that we can help accommodate those timelines. Let’s talk about that and get that into motion.

White cabinets in kitchen

The earlier you start the better because then you have more time to think about it, to think about the design. If you’re someone who likes to have the time to think about how that final design is going to look, the earlier you start the better so that you don’t feel rushed on your decisions. Then you can really take the time that you feel you need to really make that renovation or project your own.

Remodel vs. Renovate: What’s the Difference?

Increase Value

One reason you may want to remodel now is for personal taste or comfort, to fix an issue like the electrical wiring, or simply to improve the efficiency and functionality of your home.

Kitchen with white cabinets and hanging lights

But the #1 reason to remodel your home is to increase your home’s value. The areas of your home that will increase your home’s value and provide you with the greatest return on investment (ROI) are kitchens, home offices, and outdoor spaces.

The cabinetry making up the kitchen island are the same Cabico cabinets but with a cherry chocolate finish. You’ll find pull outs, spice pull outs, double trash drawers, touch latch hardware, and custom panels here. The kitchen is dotted with brushed stain nickel hardware.

Soothing Finishes

The wine cabinet is Elmwood Custom Cabinetry in a coffee finish. The countertops throughout are a natural stone quartz called Calacatta Lavasa. It features a breathtaking warm white background with short brown veins intermingled with long diagonal veins for a modern look. The full-height backsplash is also made up of the same Calacatta Lavasa quartz.

The upper cabinets were installed with seedy glass. Lastly, we reconfigured the framework of the peninsula, taking it from a 42-inch height to countertop level at 36 inches.

Even though homeowners are going all out when it comes to color, it’s still refreshing to see white take center stage in a new kitchen. White will always remain a classic kitchen color.

A Modern Outdoor Kitchen

A private pool with an artificial rock waterfall and a spacious backyard with a fun play center needed only one more feature for the completed outdoor living experience: a modern outdoor kitchen. This home in Sarasota’s Serenoa Golf Club underwent an upgrade to its existing outdoor kitchen for a much more modern style. With the help of our weatherproof cabinetry line, we extended this outdoor kitchen, complete with the latest and greatest appliances.

[bafg id=”23230″]

Outdoor Cabinetry

Naturekast is the go-to cabinetry line for outdoor kitchens. We installed these weatherproof cabinets in a Weathered Graphite finish, which is brown in color. Matching the brown cabinetry is a split-face ledger stone called Tuscany Scabas Stacked Stone that we installed on the wall above the hood and wrapped around the high bar wall on all sides. Tuscany Scabas Stacked Stone panels feature soft gray tones. These natural travertine panels are perfect for accent walls and backsplashes throughout the home.

In between the hood and cabinets are the countertops and backsplash. This Snowfall granite is a pristine, snowy white granite mixed with ebony and charcoal. This granite slides up from the countertop and into the backsplash that will fully cover the wall up to the bottom of the hood. The same materials are used in the extension on the other side of the window, as you can see below.

Nothing an Outdoor Kitchen Should Be Without

Regarding the high bar, we tore this down to build a completely new one. We removed the concrete walls that acted as the countertop support, as well as the glass block.

Rounding out the new outdoor kitchen are, of course, the appliances. In the main part of the outdoor kitchen by the high bar is a Green Egg grill and cabinet, ice maker, 30-inch Heston gas grill, undermount sink, and undercounter refrigerator. In the outside extension is a low burner cabinet, a vent cabinet for the gas regulator, and a kegerator to complete the perfect outdoor living experience.

Sixty Years Later

It was originally built as an artist’s retreat in 1960. Today, this home in Siesta Key’s Boyd Park is not just a retreat, but just that, a home. However, a 1,600-square foot home was just not spacious enough for the current homeowners. They knew it was time to redesign for a more modern and comfortable lifestyle, and they didn’t just do an interior redesign. They came to us with a plan for their Siesta Key remodel to absorb their outside carport into the home’s interior.

The New Blue

We’re going to start with the bright yellow front door in the empty carport. All of this changed. We framed in the entire carport so that it became part of the interior.

[bafg id=”23172″]

What was the carport space became the new kitchen and the laundry room. Cabico cabinets line the new space in a deep blue finish called Maritime Nights. Quartz countertops with sporadic black veining called White Lightning sit below the new windows. Solid white porcelain tiles called Alaska make up the floor. Some features in the kitchen include a kitchen island with waterfall sides, an ice maker at the end of the island, a double trash pullout, and undercabinet lighting throughout. Browse the photos in the gallery below to see more photos.

As mentioned above, part of the carport space became the new laundry room. The same blue cabinets and white tops from the kitchen went in here for a cohesive look. There is also a refrigerator here. We put in a new pocket door to keep this space and the kitchen separate.

Popular Closet Design Trends

What Happened to the Old Kitchen?

So, if the carport became the new kitchen, what happened to the old kitchen? The original kitchen was in the front of the home. This was obviously demoed completely since the kitchen ended up moving to another area.

In the old kitchen’s place is a new guest bath. The white Alaska porcelain tile return here on the walls, floor, and shower. The shower also has a fixed glass partition instead of a moving door.

Updated Siesta Key Remodel Exterior

Because the front exterior changed so much during this Siesta Key remodel, there were some redesigns out here as well. The front door (no longer bright yellow) moved so that it’s now hidden from the street. A new angled wall done in a brick-look tile at the entry piles up to the roofline.

The existing carriage lights remained, just moved since the front door moved. The existing roof remained as well and was extended and built out over the newly constructed kitchen and laundry room.

Remodelers & the Holidays

With people spending more time at home, homeowners more commonly reach out to remodelers for help refreshing their homes. That, of course, includes demo as part of the process. Usually, homeowners don’t really want to have their homes torn up for the holidays. Makes sense, right? On the contrary, recent years have seen homeowners not mind going through an extensive remodel over the holiday months.

If a project begins in late October, Christmas will most likely come and go before the end of the project. Most of these homeowners might be grandparents who plan to spend the holidays with family elsewhere. Other homeowners might be single and live alone who don’t mind a mess over the holidays.

Communication is Key

Projects that occur over the holidays require extra care when it comes to client communication. Some homeowners might not want workers inside their home while vacationing. Others might want workers on-site as soon as possible to keep the project from stalling. You should have these conversations with your remodelers well before the holidays, even before demolition starts. Your remodeling company needs to know if it’s okay to work through the holidays.

Holiday Deadlines

An easy way to make sure everyone is on the same page about the project is using Buildertrend. As one of our clients, you have your own Buildertrend log in where you can easily access your calendar. Not only can we block off certain dates like Christmas and New Year’s Day, but you can add your own items to the schedule if you prefer no work to happen on a certain day. Just be sure to inform your project manager too.

A Look Back at 2022’s Top Design Trends

A holiday-related deadline can be stressful. The homeowners’ holiday plans may depend on the deadline, which puts extra pressure on the contractor to meet it. If you bring this to our attention during initial meetings, we will be transparent with you on whether we believe a holiday deadline is possible. We don’t make promises we can’t keep. It’s more important to be upfront than see problems in the end.

Taking a Break

Despite workloads, remodelers still plan to take at least a short holiday break. As for Cabex, our showroom will be closed December 23 at noon until December 27 at 9 A.M. For New Year’s, our showroom will be closed December 30 at noon until January 3 at 9 A.M.

Floor to Floor at the Ritz

At the west end of Fruitville Road is the towering new Ritz-Carlton Residences. It’s the epitome of luxury living, but did you know the interior of these condo units don’t exactly look all that luxurious when they’re newly built? That’s why the homeowners contact design-build companies to come in and create the final extraordinary touches to their homes. This is what we recently did for two separate units in the Ritz. Both designs involve luxurious, custom fireplaces with water vapor fire. Step on the private elevator with us as we start on the fourth floor and end on the 14th floor as we take a look at our various build-out projects.

Let the Holidays Inspire Your Kitchen Remodel

The 4th Floor: Emerald Ocean

We start our ascent up the Ritz Residences with our first project on the fourth floor. A luxury electric fireplace is the new eye-catching centerpiece in the living room.

Green stone around fireplace

Surrounded by luxurious Emerald Green Quartzite, this particular one of our custom fireplaces sits between two stacks of floating shelves that have LED strip lights to provide a milky glow above two heaps of fire-ready logs (which of course is purely for decorative purposes as the fireplace is electric).

The 14th Floor: Fire & Ice

Four flights higher is a unit showcasing our final project we recently completed in the Ritz. The electric fireplace returns here but in two separate places. What was a bare wall in the living room is now a modern floating fireplace surround constructed out of Venetian plaster. The interior of the fireplace is painted flat black.

Concrete-look fireplace surround overlooking cityscape

The same icy fireplace surround is in the den. There are a couple of additional touches here though. The floating shelves are Elmwood Custom Cabinetry with a bright white aqua gloss finish. 3D decorative wall panels were installed on the back wall above the fireplace. These wall panels run from corner to corner and from the top of fireplace to the bottom of the soffit, finishing out one of the most beautiful custom fireplaces we’ve designed.
