Preparing For a Remodel: Protection Protocol

The First Step

Remodeling is an exciting project to undertake, but it can be disruptive while being done. Walls move, fixtures change, plumbing and electrical work turn off and on repeatedly. There’s a lot of work going on beneath clouds of dust and noise. That’s why the first step on site in any remodeling project we start is protection protocol. This important first step keeps your home and belongings protected.

The Process

To show you an example of our protection protocol process, let’s take a look at a condo we’re remodeling in the new Ritz Residences in Downtown Sarasota. The first thing we do when we walk into a unit like this, or a residential home for that matter, is protect the floors with Ram Board. Ram Board is heavy-duty, breathable, temporary floor protection engineered for contractors. It rolls out flat and protects your floor against paint, water, mud, and much more. What we’re protecting in this unit is a tile floor already installed throughout the entire space. For extra-duty protection, we also added an additional layer on top of the Ram Board with a quarter-inch board. We then put tape over each seam to prevent debris from getting underneath and scratching up the floor.

Another item that’s very important to protect is the return air filter. We put filter over the air vents to keep dust from getting up there. The more demo we do, the more frequently we change the filters.

More Protection

In this Ritz unit specifically, we’re not touching the kitchen, which was built by the developer. To protect this area, we built a wall from floor to ceiling, taping the edges to keep any dust from getting into the kitchen. There are also a lot of corners in the hallway here that can be easy to bump into. We covered these with heavy-duty cardboard corners and also the washing machine and dryer with a foam board during protection protocol.

We spent a lot of time in this condo making sure everything was protected properly. We’re going to pay that extra attention to protection protocol to not just a condo, but a residential home, even if we’re remodeling a smaller area like a powder bathroom. It’s so important to protect your home, and taking the time up front to truly protect your home helps everything run much smoother and more efficiently.
