5 Home Design Features to Consider

The five home design features that you should consider during your home remodel are more like topics or general ideas behind the design rather than specifics.

1. Maintenance

One of the big ideas is maintenance. How are you going to use this space? Do you want marble which might be a little more high-maintenance, or do you want to go with quartz which would be lower in maintenance?

2. Style

To tie into the maintenance on the design aesthetic, what style do you want to go with? Are you looking at a design more on the contemporary side, or are you looking at something more traditional?

 3. Timeless Look

Another feature is having a “timeless” look. You know you want certain aspects of that design to be timeless, and we like telling a lot of our clients that those larger elements in your home like your floor and your cabinetry are things that you are not going to want to change very often. Those should be more timeless, and maybe you stick with more trendy features in the sense of your furniture or your wall colors. Those are things that can be more easily changed over time.

4. Use of Space

How are you going to use your space? That may determine how you want to design it. Are you a person who entertains and throws a lot of parties? If you are, then maybe you want a full-service butler’s pantry rather than a butler’s pantry that just has some additional storage.

5. Functionality

Another design feature is functionality. Are you using that space for show, or are you using it because you need the utility of it? In the case of the butler’s pantry, you need that utility, so you want all the elements in there whereas maybe if you have a powder room that’s in a different part of the home, you can do something very creative. You can make that powder room almost like a piece of art in the sense of doing crazy wallpapers or unique sink and faucet combinations. That might not be very practical in the sense of cleaning or neatness, but if it looks cool and you’re not using that area very often, that would be a place that you would use as an art piece instead of going for functionality.
