Trendings in Color
Senior Designer Joe Clark spoke with Sarasota Style Magazine about what home improvement trends we can expect to see this year, especially in the Sarasota area. In Part 1 of 5 of the full interview exclusively here on cabexconstruction.com, Joe talks about trends in color.
What are the Color Trends for 2021?
The “it” color used to be a sort of yellow beige, which seemed to last forever. Then it turned into a blue gray. Now we’re marrying those two. I think gray is still staying around but shifting toward a warm gray. For a long time, it was very cool. A lot of the color trends too were very light and airy gray wood-look floors. I think we’re shifting away from that toward a more natural-looking floor. Part of that may have to do with people being home more too. When you’re renovating big parts like flooring and cabinetry, you’re not going to change them frequently. That’s why we go for a more timeless look and style there. It’s the trendier things like wall colors, furniture, and throw pillows that are more easily and readily able to be changed.
A lot of our clients seem to be leaning toward marble or marble-look options like marble-look porcelain tiles and the color ranges associated with that. We’re definitely seeing the use of the blacks a lot- matte black tiles, matte black hardware, and matte black plumbing fixtures. The black and white scheme is seeing a resurgence. With the whites, the color is more on the warmer side, making it warm and airy, mixing with décor like saw grass, lighter color leather tones, and lighter color natural woods mixed in with the white background tones.
So Are You Seeing Color at All Then?
For kitchens especially, I think people are using more color. We’re seeing more requests for color cabinetry lately, especially in the blue tones. A couple of designers here are working on blue kitchens right now. Pattern-wise, I’m seeing more pattern and texture. We’ve gotten requests for herringbone (A.K.A. broken twill weave) or chevron patterns lately, so that’s kind of harkening back to the timeless classic looks. We’re also using the hexagon more, which was used a lot back in the early 1920s. It’s been modernized though in the sense that it’s an oversized hexagon. That would be for more on the bathroom side.
With the marble looks, both in the kitchen and bathroom, we’re seeing not necessarily real marble, but marble-look quartz. Quartz has been popular for a long time now. It seems like the marble looks with the unique patterns have become a lot more popular rather than the plain or even-toned colors. We’re seeing veining, whether it’s thin veining or that Calcutta look where it has a really pronounced vein, and then you book-match those if you’re doing a waterfall end so that the vein continues in the pattern to the floor. From a design standpoint, it’s fun to do things like that.
I see blue as one of those color trends that’s always relevant. Depending on the shade, there’s always something in fashion or design that’s blue. It’s very modern, but at the same time if you’re pairing a blue or white kitchen with a matte brass look for the handles, that’s a pretty cool “now” look. However, the blue and white could also be very classic. There’s nothing wrong with black and blue either. I know that’s one of those design faux pas. I guess the right answer is, it depends.
