Go Big or Go Small? Open vs. Dedicated Spaces

Clients come to us with all kinds of design ideas. When it comes to whether the client wants to tear down walls and open everything up or section off a big house into smaller, dedicated spaces, we’re actually designing spaces for both concepts.

For a long time, the trend was to open everything up and make everything as open as possible. That’s not the only request we’re getting anymore. Lately, we’ve been noticing homeowners asking for designs with more dedicated spaces. Smaller, more intimate spaces are really great from a comfort standpoint, from a usability standpoint, from a less formal standpoint, and a lot of our clients like the dedicated spaces because it adds back that formality, and it gives them their separate spaces. These rooms are like little pockets of oasis. One room can be a little reading area for example.

Going back to the trend of opening everything up, many homeowners still want to tear down those walls, especially around the kitchen. It’s all about getting back to the center of the home where everybody gathers, and that would be the kitchen. Homeowners want to tear down those walls to have that feeling of family and gathering. There’s a lot of activity that happens in the kitchen whether it’s family time, eating, cooking, or hanging out with friends. No one wants to leave that one person out of a celebration who must go back into the kitchen to clean dishes or put away food for example. In master bathrooms too, especially in Florida, we’re opening up the space to create easy access.

Whether an open or dedicated space is better for your home really is up to you and your preferences. Do you want that small, private room to relax in and have quiet to read a good book, or do you want to be in the center of everything that’s happening? It’s really up to you. Our designers can draw up plans for your remodel with either concept (or even both!). Let’s schedule a free design session together to talk about it!
