Updating in Place

Keeping as Is

A lot of times in remodeling, it can be better, especially in a condo situation, where you need to keep everything where it currently is. This is called updating in place. Think this with a kitchen remodel; you might need to keep your main items like your sink, fridge, stove, or dishwasher in the same place despite undergoing an upgrade. There are different parameters to adhere to within that building construct where maybe plumbing stacks can’t be moved, certain drain lines can’t be moved, your toilet might need to stay in the same place, or your shower drain might need to remain as well. We work within these confines to create a new space for the client.

A Refresh

Sometimes updating in place is a good way to refresh the look of your space without having too much of an impact. It gives you a really cool space that you’re already familiar with. For example, it’s always good when you’re updating your space to make it brighter. It’s just a good way to give a fresh look to the space, and when you use those brighter colors, it adds a brighter and liveliness to the design.

Here are four easy ways you can update in place right now:

1. Add dimmers and replace lightbulbs. Firstly, good lighting makes a world of difference in the look and feel of a space. Switching out static light switches for dimmable light switches is a relatively simple yet hugely rewarding option. To complete the lighting update, consider replacing incandescent light bulbs with dimmable LED bulbs, providing a cooler, whiter light. This also helped you reduce your energy bill.

2. Paint. Nothing gives a space a more dramatic update than a fresh coat of paint. Go brighter, crisper, and cleaner.

3. Add a “pop.” Next, choose a color or texture that you love and sprinkle it throughout the room, or ideally the entire home, to add a consistent and unifying theme. Repeat the “pop” in your throw pillows, towels, sheets, placemats, picture frames, candles— all items that are replaceable, relatively inexpensive, and which you can move from room to room as you play with placement.

4. Remove the carpeting. Lastly, consider updating your carpet floors to hard floors. They’re more hygienic, easier to clean, and more modern. You can always keep an area rug in the living room, next to the bed, or down the hallway to keep that comfort underfoot
